Despite the fact that Ma Pi Leng Pass is the most dangerous road section in the Dong Van UNESCO Global Geopark, where the terrain is extremely rugged, it also contains many outstanding geosites in addition to grandiose and breath-taking landscape. The area mainly consists of many types of limestone that have been formed in the marine environment during c.415-260 million years ago. Visitors may find there many types of fossils e.g. Fusulinids, Corals, Crinoids etc. Of special interest may be the global life crisis at the end of Devonian period, c.375-360 million years ago (the Frasnian-Famennian boundary, where c.19% of families and 50% of genera of the Earth’s biota went extinct). Later tectonic movements have transformed the sea into continent, causing lots of folding and faulting in the limestones. The grandiose landscape as seen today is the result of tectonic activities during the last c.32 million years, especially during the last c.5 million years, along with many other geological processes e.g. erosion, planation, karstification etc. The Tu San Canyon on the Nho Que River at this Ma Pi Leng Pass is about 1.7km long, 700-800m deep and 70-80o steep and regarded as the deepest canyon not only in Vietnam but ... Along with other cultural heritage sites e.g. the Happiness Road - the National Historic-Scenic Monument, the Youth Monument etc. these geosites greatly contribute to offering visitors one of the most memorable experiences in the Dong Van UNESCO Global Geopark
