Ma Pi Leng Pass - also dubbed the “First Pass” - is a section, about 20km long, of the National Highway 4C that connects Dong Van and Meo Vac districts. It is also the most difficult, but most heroic part of the legendary Happiness Road. It is recognized as a National Scenic Attraction pursuant to Decision No. 4194/QD-BVHTTDL dated 16/11/2009. The name "Ma Pi Leng" has several explanations e.g. "cool horse nose", "snow on horse nose" or "dead horse slope" etc., all alluding to the danger of the Pass. And surely from this point visitors will be able to partially feel it: (1) Tu San Canyon - the steepest, up to 70-90o , narrowest, deepest, up to 700-800m, more than 1.7 km long section of the Nho Que River - a clear evidence of the Nho Que River fault that began about 20 million years ago. It is considered the deepest canyon in Vietnam, even in Southeast Asia. (2) The planation surface at 1,350-1,750m asl, on which is a very unique residual karst landscape with numerous small towers and cones that are either isolated or still connected on a common base. (3) The grandiose erosional surfaces along the Nho Que ... View more

(3) The grandiose erosional surfaces along the Nho Que River - one of the most breath-taking landscapes, sometimes even more majestic than the vertical limestone cliffs. Their height is c.500-600m with the upper edge being alternately concave or convex. (4) Especially, from here, it is also possible to see the bottom of the ancient Meo Vac valley in the form of gentle hills at altitude of 900m asl, quite comfortable for some households to settle down. They are regarded the oldest river terrace remains throughout not only the whole Meo Vac valley but also the Nho Que river valley. (5) Contributing to the splendor of nature is the hydropower station on the Nho Que River with two turbines of total 32MW capacity, giving an output of 129 million Kwh a year. In addition, visitors may also find other interesting features e.g. fault surface, folds, needle karst tower, boundary between different limestone layers etc
