Around 250 million years ago, at the boundary between end of the Permian period (the last period of Paleozoic era) and beginning of the Triassic period (the first period of Mesozoic era), the most severe life crisis in the history of evolution of the biological world occurred at a global scale. About 95% of marine species, 70% of terrestrial vertebrate animals as well as numerous species of insects went extinct during this event - scientifically called “Permian-Triassic chrono-stratigraphic boundary”. The global biodiversity so severely declined that the life on Earth could revive only around 10 million years later. Although this extinction event was at a global scale, it is difficult to find it in rock layers, except at some places. Collisions between tectonic plates, meteorite hits, volcanic eruptions, global climate changes as well as those of chemical and physical properties of sea water etc. are considered by scientists as the possible reasons of this Planet life crisis event. The “Permian/Triassic chrono-stratigraphic boundary” at Sung La is being studied by international and Vietnamese scientists. It is a geological heritage of international significance of the Dong Van UNESCO Global Geopark. Together with other cultural heritge values, it makes Sung La an excellent ... View more
